Triennial Memorial Service 2025

On Friday 8 August 2025 the sixth triennial memorial service to recognise former Members of Parliament who had died was held. Family members of 18 former Parliamentarians gathered in the Debating Chamber of Parliament to celebrate the public lives and service of former members who had died in the preceding three years.

Opening with the karakia/mihi by Alishia Moeahu and Nate Rowe, and presided over by the Speaker, Rt Hon Gerry Brownlee, the service recognised the former members’ contributions to Parliament and to the country.

Hon Peter Dunne, President of the Association, welcomed the families from throughout New Zealand, including spouses, their children, grandchildren and close friends.

Rev John Terris, a former Parliamentarian, acted as the Officiant for the proceedings and magnificent music was provided by the award winning twenty-four-member Vocal FX Chorus.

Messages from the Prime Minister, Rt Hon Christoper Luxon and Leader of the Opposition Rt Hon Chris Hipkins were read. The Speaker gave a warm and fitting tribute to the former Parliamentarians for the work and associated challenges they often faced during their time serving their constituents, especially the time away from their families.

He acknowledged and thanked the families for allowing their loved ones to serve and represent their electorates and the country.

The service included a roll call of honour listing each member with a summary of their service and achievements.
