October 2023
The 2023 winner of the Association’s essay competition was Isla Willacy, a Year 13 student from Katikati College, Bay of Plenty, with her essay entitled ‘Culture Wars vs Common Ground’. On the recommendation of the judges a runner-up prize was also awarded to Olivia Zhu, a Year 12 student at Baradene College, with her essay.
Students were invited to submit their ideas on the topic: “What are the important elements of a successful democracy in New Zealand? Why are they important, does New Zealand currently meet them, and can they be improved?”
As in previous years, the competition was judged independently by Professor Stephen Levene and Rosemary Scott. The Association is very appreciative of the time, thought and consideration given by the judges to the assessment of the submitted entries.
Prize money for the winner was generously donated by The New Zealand Business and Parliament Trust. The winner and runner-up were presented with their prizes by the Governor General Rt Hon Dame Cindy Kiro at a reception at Government House and also enjoyed a visit to Parliament, albeit a rather quiet affair given it was just two days before the election!
The Association’s triennial essay competition is part of its commitment to encouraging and supporting democracy in New Zealand.
