On the 19th August 2022 families and friends gathered in the Debating Chamber to remember 27 former Members of Parliament who had died since 2018. Organised by the Association of Former Members of Parliament of New Zealand (AFMPNZ), hosted by the Speaker, Rt Hon Trevor Mallard, and officiated by Rev John Terris, the fifth triennial Memorial Service recognised the service of the former Members during their lifetime, particularly their parliamentary service.
The moving service included karakia, prayers and readings, the calling of a roll of honour listing the former Members, statements read on behalf of the Prime Minister, Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern and the Leader of the Opposition, Christopher Luxon and musical tributes by the a cappella group Vocal FX Chorus.
“The triennial memorial service enables former members to be remembered, in an appropriate and relevant way, in the place synonymous with their public service,” says Hon Peter Dunne, President of the Association. “It is also the opportunity to recognise and acknowledge the contributions and support provided by the families of the members.”
A recording of the service, together with the Order of Service and roll of honour is posted on the AFMPNZ website: www.afmpnz.co.nz (TBC)
